From 5 teams to 10: How Donnybrook’s Basketball Club is growing fast

The Donnybrook Dragons Basketball Club began with a free basketball clinic run through the Craigieburn Basketball Association at Donnybrook Primary School in 2024.

Kids joined in from the Donnybrook, Kalkallo, Mickleham and other surrounding suburbs.

Current Dragons Club President, Kirsty Saggu, travelled from Beverage with her children to attend. Soon after, the Donnybrook Dragons began.

“When we first started we had barely five teams and now in our summer season for 2025, 2026, we have 10 teams,” Kirsty said.

In the Summer 2025/26 season nine out of the 10 teams have made it to the semi finals.

“We’ve been in a couple grand finals but haven’t quite got the win yet,” Kirsty said.

“We’re hoping one of our nine teams this season might get across the line and we might get a win.”

Rapid growth reflects Donnybrook’s expanding population

This level of growth is closely tied to the suburb’s development, with new residential developments bringing in young families who are actively seeking local activities for their children.

Dave Williams, Principal of the Donnybrook Primary School where the Dragons train, highlights the huge increase in student numbers when asked about the booming local population.

“We opened Donnybrook Primary School together with me as principal in January 2023, we started with 114 students and as of today we’ve got 709 students at our school.

“We’ll plan to be a school of over 900 to begin next year,” Principal Williams said.

The Dragons are also planning to expand the team age groups and cater for more players joining and continuing to play.

Like many grassroots organisations, the club depends on parents stepping into coaching and administrative roles.
